Tips for Converting a Shipping Container to Storage Space
Used shipping containers can be converted into a number of useful structures, such as workshops, temporary offices, storage buildings and houses.
If you are converting a shipping container to a storage facility or living area, you’ll likely want to upgrade the interior to make it more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. Framing the interior, hanging drywall and putting in a floor can help both the practical and aesthetic purposes of the container. You’ll likely also want to install insulation to keep hot air in and cold air out.
For storage space, fewer alterations will be needed, but there are still a few changes you may want to make to increase the utility of the container. You’ll likely want to secure the storage container with a lock. You can chain and padlock the storage container shut, or create a more secure environment by fitting the storage container with a lock.
Depending on where you’ll be using the storage container and what you’ll be storing in it, you may want to install electricity and lighting in your storage container. Battery powered lights will work just fine in a storage container. If more electricity or electrical outlets are needed, used shipping containers can easily be wired up by a knowledgeable electrician.
Some people using cargo containers for storage may also want to replace the flooring of the container. Most containers have wooden flooring that may not be appropriate for all uses. Again, cargo containers are easy to outfit with new flooring, thanks to their modular shape.
