LGI Transport, LLC, a leading provider of storage containers for sale in NJ, has put together some information to help guide buyers through the shopping process.
What Do I Need To Know Before Shopping?
Storage containers have various options to appeal to the needs of many business owners. Watch the video below to figure out some of the specifics you’ll need to know before shopping around for your container.
Now that you know what you’re exactly looking for, it’s time to inspect your potential containers. A qualified shipping container company will help you inspect the following:
Exterior Walls
First off, walk around the container to inspect the exterior walls of the shipping container. Look for wall cuts, check for old improper patches (which could be a problem in the future), streaking rust, or top rail damage. Investigate the walls further to see if they are straight (not excessively pushed in or out) and that the top rails and bottom are all straight and in good condition.
Undercarriage
If you can, ask the seller to check it out. Typically you won’t usually need to look at the undercarriage, but it won’t hurt to take the time to see that all the understructure is in excellent condition and well protected from the future potential rusting problems.
Roof
Most companies will have a safe way to inspect the container roof. You don’t walk upon it, briefly, look at it. Keep an eye out for rust build-up, especially around the corner fittings as those areas tend to have dents that create water pooling and rust build up.
Doors
Inspect the lock rods, make sure they are straight and swing freely. While using the doors, gauge how much effort is required. Next, you’ll need to inspect door gaskets. There are two gaskets: one outer gasket seals against the outside surface of the header, threshold, and doorposts. Then the inside gaskets that seal against the inside edge of these same surfaces. Check that the gaskets are not broken, cut, or damaged in a way that will allow water into your container.
Interior
This is one of the most essential, lengthy parts of your visual inspection. Most often the floor is made of thick plywood which is secured to the steel understructure. Look for soft spots, broken sections, heavy stains, or loose joints. All containers will have some odor, but some smells can be telling to the condition of the container. Look for potential areas on the walls which may cause leaks, some scratches, or dents are expected. Lastly, look at the ceiling for dents near the corners of the container.
