Modify a Shipping Container into a Home

Shipping container architecture is becoming increasingly popular as designers and do-it-yourselfers realize the adaptability and durability of these storage vessels. Used shipping containers can be converted into housing, thanks to their modular shape and durability.

Shipping containers have a variety of benefits. Constructed from Corten steel, they are rust, corrosion and mold resistant. Many building experts praise used shipping containers as an extremely safe superstructure for homes, offices and other buildings.

To begin, buy a used shipping container. Next, build a foundation at least six inches above the ground for your shipping container structure. You’ll then need to lower the container on top of the finished foundation and secure it to the foundation.

You’ll next need to remove paneling and flooring from the container and repair and clean the inside of it if necessary. You’ll then need to build a new subfloor using one-inch plywood sheets and mark areas on the walls for any new windows and doors. When you’ve chosen where the windows and doors will go, cut the necessary holds in the container and smooth the edges afterward. Then weld or install window and door frames as needed.

You’ll next need to install wiring and electrical infrastructure and erect studs inside the container to hang walls from. When that’s done, add insulation, hang your drywall, and add any carpeting or flooring needed.

Multiple storage containers can be combined to create larger buildings or homes. Some apartments and dorms stack containers one on top of the other to create complexes.
